About
System9 Research
The publication arm of System9. We produce peer-reviewed papers, formal specifications, and foundational research that underpin (and extend) the platform's distributed cryptographic and consensus primitives.
Why a research arm
Enterprise, government, and military buyers weight technical depth and academic publication record heavily in procurement decisions. A platform that handles ballot secrecy, sovereign-jurisdiction trust partitioning, or coercion-resistant voting must be defensible in front of cryptographers, not just engineers.
System9 Research exists to ground product capabilities in formally specified, externally reviewable artifacts. Each platform feature with cryptographic or consensus-theoretic content has a corresponding paper or formal spec, submitted, published, and revisable as the field evolves.
We also publish foundational work that does not yet ship in the platform. The through-line, distributed intelligence, distributed trust, and the algebraic primitives that ground them, is the same regardless of whether a result is product-shipping or product-adjacent.
Research themes
Four interlocking themes define the agenda. Each paper carries one or more theme tags , most carry several.
Distributed cryptographic protocols
End-to-end verifiable voting, threshold cryptography, formal contract governance, and other protocols where cryptographic trust must be partitioned across mutually distrustful jurisdictions.
Distributed-systems primitives
Consensus, partition tolerance, replication invariants, and the systems machinery that makes correctness possible across multi-cell deployments, including disconnected and air-gapped environments.
Algebraic and mathematical foundations
Number-theoretic, group-theoretic, and combinatorial structures underpinning the platform's cryptographic and consensus primitives. Foundational depth that enables platform features rather than decorating them.
Physical realizations and demonstrations
Tangible artifacts that make algebraic structure visible: mechanical demonstrations of cyclic groups, didactic devices that ground theory in physics, and the occasional cross-disciplinary write-up.
Publication cadence
We target two to four published or preprinted papers per year at steady state. The mix is roughly half direct-to-product papers (e.g., the verifiable voting voting family), half foundational or adjacent papers that establish depth without an immediate product tie-in.
Each paper progresses through the same lifecycle. Status is shown on every paper card and detail page.
- DraftInternal first draft. Citable internally, not yet shareable externally.
- PreprintPosted to arXiv or equivalent. Citable but not peer-reviewed.
- SubmittedUnder review at a named venue.
- AcceptedAccepted by the venue; awaiting publication or camera-ready submission.
- PublishedPublished in a peer-reviewed venue with a permanent identifier (DOI / arXiv ID).
Connection to the platform
Research and engineering share source repositories, citations, and review surfaces. Cryptographic protocols described in our papers are the same protocols implemented in the System9 platform, not adjacent or analogous, but identical at the level of the formal specification.
Where a paper's claim is implemented in the platform, the paper's source repository points at the test suite that verifies it. Where it is not yet implemented (foundational or forward-looking work), the gap is documented honestly rather than glossed.
